Curious to see how we turned a simple cocktail dress into a stunning Avant-garden masterpiece? Check out our step-by-step transformation process, complete with creative twists and upcycled magic!

Dressing according to the theme of an event is more than just following a dress code; it’s a way to fully immerse yourself in the experience and show your enthusiasm for the occasion. It sets the tone, enhances the atmosphere, and can even spark conversations and connections with others who have put in the same effort.
Whether it’s a costume party, a gala, or a themed fundraiser, wearing the right attire helps you and everyone around you feel like a part of something special, making the event memorable and enjoyable for all.

In the context of art, culture, and fashion, “avant-garde” refers to people or works that are experimental, radical, or unorthodox. The avant-garden theme for this fundraiser, Trash Makeover Challenge, pushed the boundaries of what is considered the norm, by exploring new ideas, techniques, and forms of expression.
This one-of-a-kind fashion show brings together amateur and professional designers who craft stunning garments using at least 90% recycled materials. These eco-friendly creations are then showcased in a spectacular event, captivating the audience with their creativity and innovation.
Who knew garden netting, greenery, and a
plastic poultry fence could transform into a total
showstopper gown by designer Greg Lara?

So, as the auctioneer, I wanted to have fun and fit in with this avant-garden theme. I challenged stylist and designer Heidi Ivey from H.I. Coture to take an old green dress I had and give it a bold, creative, and experimental makeover using recycled materials. And guess what? She totally nailed it! 🎨♻️ That dress went from ‘meh’ to ‘OMG’ with a twist of avant-garde magic.
Here are four easy steps to follow if you’re ready to give your clothes a fresh, upcycled makeover!
1. **Gather Materials:** Collect recycled elements like old fabric scraps, old dress, plastic bags, buttons, ribbons, and even natural elements like dried flowers or leaves. Heidi just happened to have the perfect green and blue fabric stashed away, ready for the rescue mission.

2. **Design:** Experiment with layering, adding textures, or even creating a detachable train using these materials. In this case, think avant-garde! With the green and blue fabric, Heidi layered it in the front and back like it was meant to be, turning that plain dress into an upcycled masterpiece. We decided to go all in and give the dress a dramatic twist with a diagonal hemline, starting long and ending short. 🎉✂️

3. **Accessorize:** Create statement pieces like a headpiece or belt using extra scraps. The totally fun fascinator was crafted from leftover material and feathers. When it comes to upcycling, the bolder, the better—go big or go home! 🎩✨

4. **Assemble:** Stitch or glue your materials onto the dress or headpiece, creating a unique, eye-catching design that embodies the avant-garden theme.

At the final fitting, we had a fashion epiphany! Instead of a straight hem across the knee, we went with an asymmetrical look—a mix of long and short hems. It’s all about adding a little drama to the ensemble! 💃✂️
With the design unveiled, it’s spinning into the spotlight and feeling like a rockstar!
